Z is for...

I am so saddened that this A to Z challenge is coming to an end.  My life had purpose and direction in April. Okay, I wouldn't go so far to say that my life lacks purpose and direction, but sadly, most days I don't do a lot of writing.  And I'm a writer.  So what's the problem? It's not writer's block; it's more like, what's the freakin' point block?  On April 1, 2012 I had like 24 followers and very few of them ever commented on my blog.  It's really difficult to put words out there when you know no one is going to read them or comment about a post.  Most days I'm like, hey, I've got laundry to do and groceries to buy and kids to entertain, so why write? Especially about death? It makes most people uncomfortable.  But through this challenge, I have found a few people who actually appreciate my effort.  And that makes me INCREDIBLY HAPPY!
My plan for May is to market this here death blog.  I want guest posters.  I want to do Q&A.  I want to promote others who are also writers.  I want to capture that excited feeling I had each morning when I saw that I had comments.  (If only I could sell that feeling I'd be a bazillionaire!)
Okay, so now the fun of April is over.  For everyone who stopped by and said hello, even the quiet stalkers, I appreciate you.
So what's my Z?
Bear with me a moment while I tell you a story...

Halloween is my favorite holiday.  Always has been.  It probably has to do with the fact that I spent most of my life as the girl who sat in the back row of class hiding behind a wall of frizzy hair or eating my lunch in the library because I felt weird and uncomfortable eating alone in the cafeteria.  Halloween is that one glorious day when the socially awkward get their chance to be someone else for a night.  And to top it all off, there's like a ton of FREE candy.  So, what's not to love?
For most of my life, my once yearly Halloween costume involved dressing up in a sexy costume.  (Yes, I'm one of those women. I know, I know.)  I could go into a full psychological profile of why I went that route, but I don't want to go way off topic here.
Z is for ZOMBIES!
This year I decided to embrace the fact that I was not the cute young thing that I used to be.  My Halloween plans involved trick-or-treating with my two kids and I didn't feel like being the pathetic mom in a bunny suit wandering the streets of suburban Texas with her offspring.  So, I went full on scary and had a blast.  I scared children.  I scared a few adults.  And best of all, at the end of the night as I was taking out the trash and two costume-less teenage boys were wandering past my house with pillowcases clutched in their grubby teenage hands, I growled "Want some Candy?"

And they said, "No, thanks."  But I lumbered towards them with my bowl of M&M snack packs and made them take it.

So, what's the moral of that story?
Everyone is afraid of death (zombies) but the sooner you embrace it, life becomes a lot more fun!

I also have a post I think you would like about having your writing life in order in case you die.

    1. I will totally check those links out! What's not to love about zombies? Unless, of course they're running after you or lumbering after you, depending on the movie.

  2. (groan) Zombies good...blog good...Brains, even better! LOL! I've really enjoyed reading your blogs this month Pam. This one especially, as you probably know I'm a huge fan of zombies and Halloween, too. I look forward to it every year.

    1. Thank you! I miss being able to come to writer's group every week. And next year, I will have something scary to read for the Halloween gathering. It might involve zombies.

  3. I used to have nightmares as a kid about zombies, and more than once I would find myself walking with them, pretending I was one of them, so that they wouldn't eat my brain. I know there is a deeper metaphor in there somewhere....

It's been a great month! Congrats on completing it!

    1. You went the Bill Murray in "ZombieLand" route. I love that movie.

Yes, it has been a great month! Congrats to you too!

  4. I was awkward AND Halloween scared me, so that was doom. Thank goodness for the candy.

My current Halloween MO is to show everyone my true colors and dress up like a witch. But no one is ever surprised :-)

I run up against the 'what's the freakin' point?' block a lot, too. Your plan to hit the ground running in May might just inspire me to do the same.

    1. I think getting other people involved on your blog is a great way to get re-enthused about it. I had a guest blogger a few times this month and I loved having new people's voices on here. I'm sure others did as well.

  5. What's with the popularity of zombies these days? From zombie survival courses to Brad Pitt's upcoming zombie movie World War Z. Have they actually overtaken vampires as the world's favorite undead beings?

    1. I think once vampires became sexy and not very scary, Zombies kind of kicked their asses. There is nothing sexy about a zombie.

And by the way, I belong to a group called Death, Dying and Dessert, which discusses end of life issues, so if you need a guest poster in May or June, contact me. P.S. I'll be out of town May 14 to May 24.

  7. I'm tickled to have found your blog...not that it's about death, but I enjoy your writing style and finding a new online friend.

I'm currently following 100 A-Z Blogs, I suspect that will get cut down to 20-25. I currently follow almost 600 blogs and it's time to pare that list down as well. I suspect some haven't posted in quite a while, some are for interests I no longer have and some are blogs I followed just so I could see where RVing friends were (will dump those into a folder that I can easily mark as read).

Hmmm, guess I need to blog about my blog reader and organization...LOL!

    1. This blogging is a lot of work. And I'm not even talking about the actual writing and posting. It's reading and commenting on other people's blogs, joining communities, marketing, etc.
I joined your tribe on triberr, but I still don't know what that means:)

    2. If you connect your twitter account and the RSS feed for your blog (which is http://thedeathwriter.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default), then every time you post a blog, the others in the tribe will tweet it to their twitter followers. You should check your home page on the tribe and approve blog posts of tribemates so you will then auto-tweet them to your followers. Confused yet? LOL!

  12. Lots to say...

Firstly, I love anything to do with zombies and it's cool to see a mom that isn't a walking halloween cliche.

    /Props

It's a shame the a to Z has to end. I've personally gained nothing in terms of coverage, which isn't a problem. I'm a gaming site, there were four gaming entries out of the 2000 sigh ups, so I knew very few would "get" what I'm doing and that's a-okay by me.

What I have gotten out of the A to Z is a several new blogs that I would have never had the pleasure of finding had I NOT entered. Like this one.

There is no way I would have found this epicenter of awesomeness, had I have not signed up. I don't normally Google "blogs about death." So finding this blog (amung others) makes the whole experience worthwhile for me.

Plus, a lot of folk presume if you're a writer, you can write anything. I consider myself capable as a journo, but when it comes to fiction, I haven't got a clue. So I've really enjoyed hearing how fiction writers (that I'm not married to) go aboout writing and the thought process that goes into writing a story.

Long enough comment to end on? Hell yeah!

Although this may be the end, it's only just the beginning (sorry, had to say it ^_^).

You get props for being my most loyal and most thoughtful commentator! If you didn't live way over in the UK, I'd make you some cookies.
I too found some gems in this challenge, although I feel guilty that I wasn't able to check out every one. There are only so many hours in the day.
I feel sort of let down that I don't have a plan for tomorrow and I have to do something. If only the alphabet went on forever. I guess I'm going to have to put my big girl pants on and just come up with my own ideas.
      I'm thinking death in film.
      Don't be a stranger.

  14. A lot of people will read without commenting. I actually read an article the other day talking about how commenting is just . . . "out." You've gotta bring up something controversial nowadays to get people to pipe up!

    Good luck with the marketing!

    1. Well, I declare commenting "IN!!!" What's the fun of blogging if no one ever pipes up? I think the best stuff comes out in the discussion.
Thank you for commenting! Brownie points for you!

  15. Despite the fact that I'm no fan of zombies, this was a great ending to a great series of posts. Zombies really, truly disturb me. They work me up nearly to a frenzied mania. Thanks for having me on your blog during this challenge, but thanks even more for the great pleasure of meeting you!

I share your pain of the "comment-less" posts. Post after post... you begin to wonder if anyone at all is reading what you work your ass off to share. Nearly every day I tell myself I'm going to stop because no one is interested. Then I get that rare comment and it sends me right over the moon! Just can't figure why "commenting is 'out'"...

    See you in the blogosphere!

  17. Zombies!!!! (well of course- I am one!)
It was very nice to find you through this little project. I am a round-about death writer myself. I am currently working on some ghost stories, so death is, of course, a major theme there!

    1. What's your blog, Lily? Ghosts are cool. I interviewed a medium for my book and she pretty much convinced me that spirits are all around us.
I've had a few ghostly encounters, but they were more prank encounters rather than scary.
Thanks for commenting and following. Totally appreciate it.
